What is the difference between spring and torsion suspension?
Spring suspension uses traditional leaf springs mounted below the axle, offering ease of maintenance and height adjustment. Torsion suspension uses internal rubber cords inside the axle tube, providing a smoother ride and lower deck height.
How do I know what spring capacity I need?
Spring capacity should match your axle capacity. For example, a 3,500 lbs axle requires 1,750 lbs springs per side (total capacity divided by 2). Always verify spring load rating before installation.
Can I replace leaf springs without replacing the axle?
Yes, leaf springs can be replaced independently. Ensure the new spring matches your axle's spring center distance and load capacity. Also replace U-bolts and mounting plates if worn.
What causes leaf springs to break?
Common causes include overloading, loose U-bolts, lack of lubrication between leaves, metal fatigue from extended use, and impact damage from potholes or rough roads. Regular maintenance can prevent premature failure.
How do I measure spring center distance?
Measure from the center of one U-bolt to the center of the other U-bolt along the axle tube. Common measurements are 25.5", 33", 37", and 43". This measurement must match your new spring exactly.
Do I need to replace both springs at once?
Yes, always replace springs in pairs to maintain even load distribution and prevent uneven tire wear. Replacing only one side can cause the trailer to lean and affect handling.
